WordCount
An Agile Transformation Simulation
When: September 24, 2010
Facilitator: Elisabeth Hendrickson

This day-long simulation gives participants an opportunity to experience a full transition to Agile. The team begins working in functional silos: Testers design and execute tests, Developers design and implement code, and Product Managers plot the Next Big Feature, all in isolation.

We work in timeboxed rounds. After each round, participants reflect on the events, successes, and challenges of the previous rounds to adjust their working agreements for the next round. The team (and not the facilitator) drives these changes, so participants aren't just experiencing a transition to Agile, they're driving it.

By the end of the simulation, participants have a deep understanding of why Agile practices work. They have experienced the benefits of collaboration, fast feedback, and visibility. And they can apply what they've learned about Agile and self-organization back in the real world.

This simulation is appropriate for anyone dealing with a transition to Agile. For people trying to figure out what a shift to Agile means for them, and for their role, the simulation offers a preview of what to expect. For people leading the change, the simulation offers an opportunity to coach others through the transition, and observe others' sometimes surprising actions and reactions throughout the transition.
